No Audit BS Please!

My exact face during an audit when someone is trying to fill me with BS.............................

The world of HSE has drastically changed over the years and I had hoped the policing type approach displayed by 'safety officers' left the building at the same time as the auditors who look over the top of their geggs like their presenting evidence in a Line of Duty interview.

But maybe not, as audits are still viewed as something to be feared.

But not here. Although a certification or legal audit does come with some standard requirements, in the most part, I am working with clients to improve their systems, processes, operational performance and keep people and the environment safe.

So what I don't need is people showing half records which disguise the fact they haven't done something. And worse, think I won't notice. Or the oh, it must be in another drive, I'll send it on., or that person isn't in today but they've definitely done it.

What I do enjoy is being able to share experiences with the auditees to help them to improve their systems. We see so many examples of good practice why wouldn't we? During the last audit I did, the compliance manager said she had learned more in the first half hour of our review than she had in the last 3 with another company.

This is adding value where it is most needed, not a string of non conformances on people who don't understand what the right thing to do is.

While an auditor visiting a site once a year or so isn't going have the knowledge of the site operations, that's not to say they haven't heard or seen it all before. As I am an auditee on behalf of clients as often as I am the auditor, I know every trick in the book..........
